David Beckham has been knighted and given the title of “sir“ after being knighted by King Charles III, BTA reports. “Growing up in East London with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British, I could never have imagined that I would receive such a truly humbling honour“, Beckham commented.

He added that playing and captaining his country had been the greatest privilege of his career and literally a childhood dream come true.

“Off the pitch, I have been lucky enough to represent Great Britain around the world and work with incredible organisations that support communities in need and inspire the next generation. "I am so lucky to be able to do the work I do and I am grateful to be recognised for the work that gives me so much satisfaction," he added.

As a footballer, Beckham won four national titles and 115 caps for England. He has been awarded the Order of Merit for Services to Sport and Charity.
