The Mexican team, which is defending its title, barely beat the Dominican Republic 3-2 in a match from the group stage of the "Gold Cup" tournament in the CONCACAF zone, BTA reports.

West Ham midfielder Edson Alvarez opened the scoring in the 44th minute, Fulham striker Raul Jimenez (left) added a goal in the 47th, and defender Cesar Montes scored another in the 53rd.

Jimenez now has 40 goals with the Mexican national team and is six behind Jared Borghetti, who is second in the ranking of the "Aztecs" top scorers. Javier Hernandez is Mexico's top scorer with 52.

Peter Gonzalez and Edison Ascona scored for the Dominican Republic. Beroe player Juan Pineda came on in the final minutes of the game for the team.

"It was a good win to start. I congratulate my team for keeping their emotional balance. It was a hard-won but fair victory," said Mexico coach Javier Aguirre.
