Second and third were his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastre and Charles Leclerc from Ferrari

Lando Norris was fastest in the first free practice before the Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix ahead of his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastre and Charles Leclerc from Ferrari. Fernando Alonso from Aston Martin missed the session due to back pain and Felipe Drugovic is driving in his place, BNR reported.

Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton, the record holder with eight wins at the 4.381-kilometre "Hungaroring" track, took the lead on the track but finished the session in fifth place, 0.682 seconds behind McLaren's pace.

Norris led the standings at the end of practice with a time of 1:16.052 minutes and 0.019 seconds ahead of Piastre, who won his debut Formula 1 victory in Hungary 12 months ago. The Australian leads the drivers' standings by 16 points ahead of Norris, after beating him in the Belgian Grand Prix.

Third at the "Hungaroring" was Leclerc with 0.217, while Isaac Ajar of Racing Bulls qualified between the two Ferrari cars.
