Finnish Kale Rovanperja (Toyota) made a convincing start in Rally Paraguay, BTA reports. The race is the tenth round of the World Rally Championship (WRC) season. After the eighth special stage, Rovanperja overtook Hyundai drivers - Frenchman Adrien Fourmeaux and Estonian Ott Tanak, respectively, by 7.1 and 7.6 seconds.

In the first edition of this rally, the drivers were often surprised by difficult sections of the track, and quite a few spectacular jumps caused damage to the cars of some of the participants.

Frenchman Sébastien Ogier (Toyota) was one of the victims, after losing more than 30 seconds at the beginning of the day due to a flat tire. The eight-time world champion is in fourth place, more than 17 seconds behind the Finnish leader.

World championship leader Elfin Evans (Toyota) had no serious incidents but is in fifth place, 21.1 seconds behind Rovanperä. Reigning world champion Thierry Neuville (Hyundai) suffered a steering problem with his i20 early in the day, which left him in sixth place, 25 seconds behind the leader.
Seven special stages totalling 113.6 kilometres will be on the programme for the second day of the rally.
