US officials held talks with authorities in Kabul regarding Americans detained in Afghanistan, the Taliban administration's foreign ministry said, quoted by Reuters, BTA reported.
Adam Boehler, the Trump administration's special envoy for hostage issues, and Zalmay Khalilzad, the former US special envoy for Afghanistan, met with Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaki.
“Both sides stressed the continuation of talks on various current and future issues in bilateral relations, especially regarding citizens detained in the other country“, the Afghan Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Mahmoud Habibi, a naturalized US citizen, is the most prominent American deprived of from freedom in Afghanistan, Washington claims. The Taliban denies holding him.
The Taliban administration, which came to power in 2021 after 20 years of US military intervention in Afghanistan, is not recognized by Washington.
After the meeting held today, Boller said that the United States would carry out a prisoner exchange with the Taliban government, AFP reported. However, the date on which this exchange would take place was not announced, AFP added.
