The Romanian Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian ambassador to Bucharest, Vladimir Lipaev, yesterday after a Russian drone violated Romanian airspace during an attack in neighboring Ukraine, the ministry announced, quoted by Romanian media, BTA reports.

The Romanian side expressed its strong protest against this unacceptable and irresponsible act, which constitutes a violation of Romanian sovereignty, according to a press release from the ministry, quoted by Agerpres.

„Similar recurring situations lead to an escalation and strengthening of threats to regional security. The Russian side was asked to immediately take all necessary measures to prevent future violations of Romanian airspace. Romania is in constant contact with its allies and other EU member states.“

The Romanian Defense Ministry said the drone did not fly over populated areas and did not pose an immediate threat to the safety of the population.

The incident came just days after Poland announced it had shot down Russian drones that violated its airspace during Russian shelling of Ukraine, with the support of NATO warplanes.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of escalating the war after drone airstrikes in neighboring Poland and Romania.
