Estonia has begun building an anti-tank ditch in the southeast of the country, which will be part of the expanded border fortifications of the Baltic defense zone, national television channel ERR reported.

The representative of the General Staff of the Estonian Defense Forces, Aivar Afanasiev, explained that the ditch will complement the already existing natural obstacles. "In the northeast of the country, we have a good natural obstacle - the Narva River, and further east - Lake Peipus," he pointed out.

In areas with marshy terrain, digging a ditch will not be necessary, since the equipment would not be able to pass there, Afanasiev specified.

Construction activities began in July 2025, and their completion is planned for 2027. By then, Estonia will also have about 600 bunkers as part of the defense system along its eastern border.
