US President Donald Trump announced that the Republican Party will organize a special convention before the parliamentary elections in the fall of 2026, reported Agence France-Presse. According to the American press, the Democratic Party is also considering a major convention in the same period, reported BTA.

In recent American history, the two major parties organize such conventions only when they announce their candidates for the presidential elections, which are held every four years.

“The Republicans will organize a convention before the midterm elections to show all the great things we have accomplished“, Trump said on the social network “Truth Social”, promising “exciting“ event.

Several US media outlets have indicated that his Democratic opponents may make the same move.

“Several options are being discussed for next year, including holding a large convention,“ a Democratic Party spokesman told the "Hill".

The Republican Party currently controls both houses of Congress, but by a slim majority. The November 2026 elections, which will upend all seats in the House of Representatives and a third of the Senate, will shape the second half of Trump's term, even though he has demonstrated a governing style that largely bypasses the legislature, AFP notes.

The midterm elections have sparked heated debates in some states over redistricting. Texas, for example, adopted a new electoral map with the aim of ensuring conservative control of this large southern state, with the support of Donald Trump.

In their stronghold of California, Democrats decided to respond with the same strategy. Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom drew an electoral map that gives the left up to five additional seats to neutralize the Republican advantage in Texas.
