The decrease is due to deportations, voluntary departures and naturalizations

The total number of refugees in Germany decreased by around 50,000 people in the first half of 2025, government data cited by DPA show. At the end of last year, approximately 3,550,000 refugees were residing in the country, and now their number is 3,500,000, BTA reports.

The decrease is the result of a combination of factors - deportations, voluntary return and naturalizations, the party “The Left“ said, at whose request the data was published.

In 2024, 83,150 Syrians received German citizenship, the Interior Ministry announced. However, around 492,000 people remain without a clear status. Among them are asylum seekers and people with a temporary right of residence.

A large group also represents 1,270,000 Ukrainian refugees living in Germany at the end of June 2025.

According to the MP from the “Left” Clara Bünger, the statistics should not be interpreted as a reason for joy. “The factors that force people to flee their homelands are stronger today than in previous periods in history,“ she emphasized.
