US President Donald Trump said that the Republicans will hold a convention for the 2026 midterm elections, as his party seeks to maintain control of Congress, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.
National party conventions are usually held only in presidential election years.
"The Republican Party really wants a convention for the 2026 midterm elections. We will have one at the highest level. It will be both fun and very productive", Trump said in "Truth Social".
Some Democrats have also considered holding a convention before the midterm elections, "Axios" reported late last month.
Republicans and Democrats are locked in an escalating war over congressional redistricting that could determine which party wins control of the U.S. House of Representatives, Reuters reported.
Losing the majority in Congress would hurt Trump's ability to implement his legislative agenda. Republicans currently hold 53 seats in the Senate to Democrats' 47, and they have a 219-213 majority in the House of Representatives.
