The United States may reduce its participation in the defense of NATO countries bordering Russia, BNR reported.
Such a warning, according to Reuters sources, Pentagon representatives addressed to European diplomats in late August.
According to the agency, the warning was about reducing military support for Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. One of the American representatives at the meeting was David Baker, a senior Pentagon official responsible for relations with Europe and NATO countries.
He said that European allies should be less dependent on the United States, which under Donald Trump has shifted its focus to domestic security.
European diplomats responded that such a move would increase Vladimir Putin's confidence. This happened weeks before three Russian fighter jets entered Estonian airspace.

Reuters commented that in recent weeks Trump has withdrawn from an active role in achieving peace, both in Ukraine and in Gaza, although he is still capable of sharp moves on both issues. Analysts, however, worry that any American concessions will lead to more aggressive actions on the Russian side.
Trump has repeatedly threatened Russia with secondary sanctions on countries that buy its oil if it does not commit to achieving peace. Despite the lack of progress, no action has been taken in this direction at the moment.
The agency cited other diplomatic sources as saying that this month Trump demanded that Europe impose 100 percent tariffs on Chinese and Indian goods as a condition for further American action.
