British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will announce recognition of the state of Palestine in a special statement this afternoon, the BBC reported, citing government sources, BNR reported.
The move represents a significant shift in London's foreign policy, after a number of governments argued that such recognition could only be part of a future peace process.
In July, Starmer said that Britain would change its position if Israel did not meet certain conditions, including a ceasefire in Gaza and a commitment to a long-term sustainable peace agreement.
His decision drew sharp criticism from the Israeli government - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that such a move "rewards terror".
However, ministers in the United Kingdom claim that there is moral responsibility to act because of the situation in Gaza, which has deteriorated significantly in recent weeks. Hunger and violence have increased, which the British Prime Minister previously described as “intolerable“.
Portugal is also expected to recognize the Palestinian state today, the Foreign Ministry in Lisbon announced.
