British Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy said today that the recognition of the Palestinian state will not lead to immediate results and stressed that it must be part of a wider process to achieve peace, Reuters reports, quoted by BTA.
“Any step towards recognition is to preserve the possibility of a two-state solution“, Lammy told the television channel “Sky News“. He added that Prime Minister Keir Starmer would decide later today whether Britain should recognize Palestine as a state.
In July, Starmer said that Britain would recognize the Palestinian state if Israel failed to reach a ceasefire with the Palestinian movement “Hamas“ has not provided additional humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, has not given clear guarantees that it will not annex the West Bank, and has not shown a commitment to a two-state solution.
Lamy commented that since the July announcement and the attack on Qatar, efforts to stop the fighting have so far failed and the prospects look bleak. At the same time, he noted that Israel has made progress with a plan to resolve the conflict.
