The recognition of the Palestinian state by Western countries is a “victory“ for the rights of the Palestinians and their cause. This was stated by a senior Hamas official, Mahmoud Mardawi, quoted by Agence France-Presse, BTA reports.
“This recognition is a victory for the rights of the Palestinian people and for our legitimate cause and sends a clear message: no matter how far the occupation (Israel) goes in its crimes, it will never succeed in erasing our national rights“, Mardawi told AFP.
Great Britain, Canada and Australia simultaneously announced that they recognize the State of Palestine. Portugal is expected to take the same step later in the day.
