Over 1,000 people were executed in Iran in the first nine months of 2025, according to a report published by the Norway-based human rights organization "Hengau", DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

"Hengau" reported that 404 of the executions were carried out after the outbreak of the war between Iran and Israel in June. This represents a 40% increase since the start of the war, "which is the largest jump in the last two decades", the organization said in a press release.

"Never before have executions exceeded 1,000 in such a short period," it added.

By the end of August, the UN had already recorded 841 executions in Iran since the beginning of the year, a sharp increase compared to previous years.

According to UN data, at least 975 executions were carried out in Iran in 2024. This suggests that the number of executions carried out this year could reach its highest level in decades.

Human rights groups have long criticized Iran for its frequent use of the death penalty, accusing authorities of using executions to intimidate dissidents.

In June, Israel and Iran fought a 12-day war, during which Israeli and US forces bombed key Iranian nuclear and military sites.
