Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas called on "Hamas" and other Palestinian armed groups on Monday to hand over their weapons to the Palestinian Authority.

Abbas even stressed that armed groups should have no role in governing Gaza in the future, AFP reported.

""Hamas" and the other factions must hand over their weapons to the Palestinian Authority."

Abbas made the remarks at a two-state solution summit at the United Nations, which he attended via video link.

"What we want is a united state without weapons, a state with one law and one legitimate security force," he added.

Abbas pledged to hold parliamentary and presidential elections after the end of the Gaza war.

He even announced that a constitution would be drafted within a year.

Abbas welcomed the historic UN General Assembly declaration on a two-state solution adopted earlier this month.

Abbas also praised the countries that have recognized the state of Palestine, the latest of which was France at the same summit earlier today.

France joined the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and Portugal, who also recognized the statehood of Palestine yesterday before the UN General Assembly.
