Russia has confirmed a meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly on September 24.
It will begin at 7 p.m. Bulgarian time (12 p.m. local time).
Lavrov arrived in New York, where he will lead the Russian delegation to participate in the high-level week of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.
The government plane traveled from Moscow to the United States via the northern route in 11 hours and 40 minutes.
The highlight of the visit will be Lavrov's speech at the general political discussion scheduled for September 27.
Lavrov will traditionally hold a number of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of these events. As reported by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, Lavrov also plans to talk with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Lavrov will also participate in a number of ministerial events in various formats, including those of the BRICS and G20.
195 delegations are expected to speak at the common policy debates during the high-level week, which will be held from September 23 to 27 and again on September 29. The anniversary session of the UN General Assembly is also notable for the election of a UN Secretary-General. The mandate of the current Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, expires at the end of 2026.
