The United States is negotiating a $20 billion currency swap with the Central Bank of Argentina, US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant said in a publication in X, reports News.bg.

According to him, Washington is ready to buy Argentine government bonds in dollars, both in the primary and secondary markets, “when conditions require it“. In addition, the US will also provide a significant credit line through the exchange rate stabilization fund.

“Argentina has the tools to oppose speculators, including those who try to destabilize its markets for political purposes,“ Bessent wrote.

At the same time, Washington is working with Argentine authorities to end a tax holiday for commodity producers exchanging foreign currency.

The talks come at a time when Argentina is struggling with a severe economic crisis, a devaluation of the peso and a heavy reliance on foreign financing.
