Hurricane “Gabriel“, which has weakened to a tropical storm, passed through the Azores islands in Portugal, reported Agence France-Presse, quoted by BTA.
Authorities said that the passage of the storm was not as serious as expected and had anticipated a more dramatic situation.
The strongest gusts of wind were recorded on the island of Faial and reached a speed of 154 kilometers per hour, meteorologist Elsa Vieira reported.
The archipelago's rescue services received 59 calls for help from five islands, including the capital Ponta Delgada on the island of Sao Miguel.
“Gabriel“ is expected to continue its eastward movement and reach the southern parts of mainland Portugal on Sunday.
