Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said today that Europe cannot afford to wage war against Russia, but if its leaders make this mistake and provoke such a war, it could escalate into a conflict with weapons of mass destruction, Reuters reported, BTA reported.

Medvedev wrote on "Telegram" that Russia does not need a war with "frigid old Europe".

"They simply cannot afford a war with Russia", Medvedev said of the European powers, adding that "the probability of reaching a fatal incident always exists".

"Such a conflict has an absolutely real risk of escalating into a war in which weapons of mass destruction are used," said Medvedev, who is currently is the deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council.
