EC: Part of the reparations loan for Ukraine will be used for military equipment in Europe

Ursula von der Leyen explained that the loan will not be provided all at once, but in tranches and under certain conditions

Part of the reparations loan for Ukraine, secured by frozen Russian assets, will be used to purchase defense equipment in Europe, announced European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

"We need a more structured solution for military support (for Ukraine). That is why I proposed the idea of a reparations loan based on frozen Russian assets,", quoted "Reuters" the words of the head of the European Commission.

She explained that the loan will not be provided all at once, but in tranches and under certain conditions.

"We will strengthen our defense industry by ensuring that part of the loan will be used for military purchases in Europe and with European participation", von der Leyen specified.

According to her, no seizure of Russian assets is envisaged: Ukraine must repay the loan when/if Russia pays reparations.
