Building collapses in central Madrid, killing two workers VIDEO

Two others are under the rubble

A building under reconstruction collapsed in central Madrid last night, killing two construction workers and two others are still missing under the rubble, the mayor of the Spanish capital, Jose Luis Martinez Almeida, said, quoted by the Associated Press and BTA.

Martinez Almeida said rescue teams and police had pulled out the body of one man and found the body of another person under the rubble.

The mayor said one of the missing workers was a woman, but that it was too early to determine the gender of the body found under the rubble.

Three other workers were injured, one with a fractured leg. At around 1:00 p.m. local time, the top floor of the six-story building collapsed onto the floors below, the mayor said.

The facade remained intact and apparently prevented most of the debris from reaching the street. Firefighters and police used sniffer dogs and drones to help with the search efforts.

“We will continue working until we find the missing people,“ Martinez Almeida said.

The facade of the building was covered with a large green tarpaulin, which is typically used by construction crews when renovating older buildings.
