Babis: I will not allow the Czech Republic to leave NATO and the EU

There will be no referendum, said the winner of the parliamentary elections and likely future prime minister

The Action of Dissatisfied Citizens, which won the parliamentary elections in the Czech Republic, will not allow the country to leave NATO and the European Union. This was stated by Andrej Babis, candidate for prime minister, chairman of the Action of Dissatisfied Citizens and former head of the Czech government.

“I will be the guarantor of our foreign and defense policy. Our position is clear. There is not and will not be a referendum“, said the politician, quoted by Czech Television.

Even before the parliamentary elections held in the republic on October 3 and 4, Babis assured voters that the Czech Republic would maintain its Western orientation and commitment to Euro-Atlantic unity. “We will not allow an exit from the EU and NATO“, he said. The EU and NATO, according to the politician, are a living space for the Czech Republic.

The topic of a possible referendum on the republic's membership in NATO and the EU was raised before the parliamentary elections by Tomio Okamura, chairman of the political movement “Freedom and Direct Democracy“ (SDP). Babis is negotiating with this political force, as well as with the movement “Motorist“ (Motorist), to form a new government.

Meanwhile, Okamura himself has already stated that the issue of the referendum is off the agenda.
