Berliner Zeitung: Trump will try to win China over to his side against Russia

The American president is using tariffs and duties against Beijing to pressure it and convince it to work together to resolve the Ukrainian conflict

US President Donald Trump may try to convince China to put pressure on Russia to speed up the resolution of the Ukrainian conflict, writes German journalist Thomas Fassbender in an article for Berliner Zeitung.

„Trump needs allies. One such ally could be China. If China and the US unite, they could try to force Russia to make peace,“ he writes.

According to the author, the main problem for Trump is that China does not benefit from a conflict with Russia, but a rapprochement between Moscow and Washington is an extremely undesirable outcome for Beijing as well.

“Nevertheless, the US president will try to win China over to his side against Russia“, Fassbender believes.

According to him, Trump is using tariffs and duties against China to pressure it and convince it to work together to resolve the Ukrainian conflict.

“But who said Trump doesn't want to force China to play a more active role in calming the Ukrainian war?“, the journalist suggested.
