We will not shoot down Russian planes in NATO airspace if they do not pose a threat, but otherwise, be sure that our military command is authorized to prevent the threat. This was stated by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at a press conference on the occasion of today's meeting of the alliance's defense ministers in Brussels. The Russians know this, he added, quoted by BTA.

Let's not exaggerate Russia's capabilities - for example, we know that their pilots have difficulty controlling Russian fighter jets, Rutte said. Regarding the violations of the allies' airspace in Poland and Estonia, he explained that it is very difficult to assess when such events are intentional. According to him, in any case, it is at least a manifestation of irresponsibility.

The EU and NATO are working together, he said, regarding plans to develop a European wall against drones. NATO is a defensive alliance, but we are ready to do what is necessary to protect our territory, Rutte said. According to him, one cannot expect mirror responses from the allies to Russian actions, but the necessary measures will be taken.

Rutte did not want to comment on the possible delivery of long-range missiles to Ukraine by the United States. We must ensure that (Russian President Vladimir) Putin joins peace negotiations, that these negotiations are meaningful and lead to lasting peace, the Secretary General summarized.

I do not know whether Putin will attack NATO, but if he does, we are prepared, Rutte said. He noted that today the defense ministers discussed the increase in military spending, new challenges, joint actions to develop counter-drone capabilities, and support for Ukraine.
