For us, the possible meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest would be a positive step if it takes place and leads to achieving peace in Ukraine, a European Commission spokesperson said today at a press conference in response to questions, BTA reported.

We support President Trump's peace efforts. EC President Ursula von der Leyen welcomes any step that leads to a just and lasting peace. If the meeting in Budapest serves this purpose, we welcome it, the spokesperson added.

He specified that EU countries can grant exemptions from sanctions for overflights of Russian aircraft in such a case. The spokesperson pointed out that the EU expects all countries to implement the decisions of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which had previously issued a warrant for the arrest of the Russian president. According to him, the fact that Hungary has filed an application to withdraw from the ICC does not exempt it from the obligation to implement previously effective court decisions.

We count on Hungary and other EU countries to support the EC's proposal for additional sanctions against Russia, the spokesman said. We are taking all possible steps to support Ukraine and limit Russia's ability to wage war, he added. Russia should have stopped the senseless and illegal war against Ukraine long ago, he summarized.
