The far-right party "Alternative for Germany" (AfG) proposed that US President Donald Trump become an honorary citizen of the Bad Dürkheim district in southwestern Germany, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
Trump's family originates from Kallstadt - a small wine-growing village in the Rhineland-Palatinate province, which is part of the Bad Dürkheim district. Trump's grandparents emigrated from there to New York in the late 19th century.
"The reason we are submitting such a proposal to the district council is that Donald Trump achieved peace in Gaza and guaranteed the release of the Israeli and eight German hostages," Thomas Stefan, the leader of the local AfD faction, told DPA. He noted that Trump's roots are precisely from this region.
The district authorities confirmed that the AfD group had submitted such a proposal. The council is set to discuss the issue and make a decision at its meeting on October 29.
Local district leader Hans-Ulrich Ihlenfeld said he did not want to prejudge the council's decision, but added that he could not imagine how the proposal would be approved.
"Regardless of whether anyone would want Donald Trump to be an honorary citizen, the issue of honorary citizenship and possible criteria for it should be discussed in detail in the district council committees," said Ihlenfeld, a conservative politician.
