Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomes "very important" new energy sanctions by the United States and the European Union against Russia, reports "Reuters".

However, he said that more pressure would be needed on Moscow to ensure a ceasefire in the war.

Yesterday, the United States announced sanctions against major Russian oil companies - a day after plans for a summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin failed.

Today, EU countries officially adopted the 19th package of sanctions, including a ban on imports of Russian liquefied natural gas.

"This is very important," Zelensky stressed about the new sanctions in Brussels, where he is expected to meet with EU leaders.

He expressed confidence that a ceasefire in Ukraine was still possible, but noted that more pressure was needed on Russia for this to happen. Zelensky ruled out the possibility of territorial concessions to Moscow, which invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

In addition, he thanked Trump for the new US sanctions, praising "this decisive and well-aimed decision" that shows that "aggression will not go unanswered."

"The new US sanctions against Russian oil giants are a clear signal that prolonging the war and spreading terror has its price. And this is a fair and absolutely deserved step," he wrote on the social network X.

"It is precisely pressure on Russia that will be effective in achieving peace, and sanctions are one of its key components."
