Authorities in a German district where US President Donald Trump's grandfather lived have rejected a proposal by the far-right Alternative for Germany party to make the US leader an honorary citizen, DPA reported, BTA reported.

"Alternative for Germany" submitted its proposal, supporting it with the argument that Trump's grandfather - Friedrich - grew up in Kallstadt, a small wine-growing village in the Rhineland-Palatinate province, which is part of the Bad Dürkheim district. He moved to the US in 1885.

The party also cited Trump's efforts to achieve peace in the Middle East. After much debate, the Bad Dürkheim authorities rejected the request. The local district head, Hans-Ulrich Ihlenfeld, noted that Trump's ties to the region were not strong enough.

In addition, to become an honorary citizen, someone must demonstrate a strong commitment to the well-being of the region over a long period of time.
