German Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful held a phone conversation with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi after his visit to China was canceled at the last minute, DPA reports, BTA reports.
According to a spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry, the conversation was "very good and constructive", with issues of mutual interest in the fields of foreign policy, security and the economy being discussed. The two sides confirmed that German-Chinese relations are of strategic importance to both Berlin and Beijing.
China has also extended an invitation to Chancellor Friedrich Merz and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to visit.
Ministers Wadeful and Wang Yi expressed their desire to continue the dialogue that began in July and agreed to maintain close contacts, with the German minister's visit to be rescheduled in the near future.
Earlier this month, Wadeful canceled his visit to China after Beijing refused to confirm meetings with other high-ranking representatives besides Wang Yi, DPA recalls.
