Democratic candidate Zohranan Mamdani wins New York mayoral election, according to the forecast of the American portal DDHQ.
According to the website, 38% of the ballots have been counted in New York. Mamdani received 49.7% of the votes. Independent candidate Andrew Cuomo received 41.6%, while Republican Curtis Sliva received 8.1%.
According to CNN, 52% of the votes have been counted, with Mamdani receiving 49.6%, Cuomo 41.5%, and Sliva 8.1%. The network has not yet made a prediction about the likely winner.
Ahead of the election, US President Donald Trump urged voters to vote for Cuomo and threatened to cut federal funding to New York if Mamdani, whom he considers a communist, wins. The candidate describes himself as a “democratic socialist”.
During the campaign, Mamdani promised to freeze rent increases, make bus fares free, create a network of low-cost urban grocery stores, and raise the minimum wage from the current $16.50 to $30 an hour by 2030. To fund his social initiatives, he intends to increase wealth taxes and impose a property tax on private universities in New York to redirect funds to the free public university systems.
New York is currently led by Eric Adams, who initially ran for reelection as an independent but announced his withdrawal from the race in September.
