A protest by citizens and representatives of civil society was held in front of the Albanian parliament building in Tirana against certain provisions in the draft law “On gender equality“, which is in parliamentary discussion today, reports the Albanian Radio and Television, BTA reports.

The participants claim that some of the formulations in the bill “undermine the traditional family“ and “introduce recognition of more than two genders – male and female“. With posters with the inscriptions “There are only two genders: male and female“ the protesters demanded that the bill not be approved in its current form.

They also expressed dissatisfaction with the use of the term “comprehensive gender“ in some articles of the document, demanding that it be replaced with wording that clearly emphasizes the recognition of only two genders.

Deputies from the ruling Socialist Party explained earlier to two parliamentary committees that the draft law is aimed solely at guaranteeing equality between men and women and combating discrimination in public and social life. According to them, the text has no connection with the recognition of “fluid genders“ and does not affect the traditional family.

The Albanian government specifies that the aim of the law is to bring national legislation into line with European Union standards on human rights and equality between men and women.
