NATO has launched large-scale anti-submarine warfare exercises. The exercises are taking place in the Baltic Sea and will continue until November 14, RIA Novosti reports, quoted by Focus.

The maneuvers, called "Merlin", will be conducted by the Swedish Navy along the Swedish coast and territorial waters.

The Swedish Armed Forces said that the uneven seabed creates numerous hiding places for submarines. They announced that the Swedish Navy has developed anti-submarine warfare techniques adapted to the conditions of the Baltic Sea.

Ships from NATO's Standing Naval Group 1, Swedish corvettes, frigates, auxiliary ships, submarines from the Swedish and German navies and helicopters will participate in the exercises.

These exercises are being held for the second consecutive year and, starting in the fall of 2026, will become a permanent NATO exercise.

In recent years, Russia has noted unprecedented NATO activity on its western borders. The alliance is expanding its initiatives, calling this “deterring Russian aggression“. The Kremlin emphasizes that Moscow poses no threat to anyone, but will not ignore actions that are potentially dangerous to its interests.
