Protests against the mafia, organized by an unprecedented coalition of several associations, took place on the French island of Corsica, Agence France-Presse reported, BTA reported.
Under the slogan “Murderers, mafiosi, go away“, 1,700 people (according to the police) or 3,000 (according to the organizers) marched yesterday afternoon in Ajaccio and Bastia - the two largest cities of Corsica - to express the “need for justice and security“.
Behind the banner at the beginning of the procession, on which the slogan in Corsican was written - “Assassini, maffiosi, fora” - another banner proclaimed: “A maffia tomba, U silenziu dino” (“The Mafia kills, silence kills too”).
A second demonstration honored Piero Alessandri – general secretary of the agricultural association “Via Campagnola“, who was killed in March, and Massimo Susini – a nationalist activist shot dead in front of his beach bar in September 2019, whose name is one of the island's two anti-mafia organizations.
The two demonstrations were organized by a coalition created in September.
The first demonstration against the mafia in March brought 1,500 and 3,000 people to the streets. Nine days later, Piero Alessandri, who took part in the protest, was killed, AFP recalls.
