The US resolution on the Gaza Strip, adopted by the UN Security Council, is another “cat in the bag“, said Russia's permanent representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzia after the vote.
“President Trump's plan did not state that they would engage in the demilitarization of Gaza and the disarmament of local groups, using all available means. However, the resolution assigns the mission such peacekeeping objectives that this could turn it into a party to the conflict and take it beyond the scope of peacekeeping. As far as we understand, none of the potential troop-contributing countries has signed such a resolution. At the same time, we note that the members of the council were practically not given time to work conscientiously and seek compromises. Hand-wringing in the capitals and delegations in New York cannot be called conscientious work. In short, the document presented by the United States is another “pig in a poke“. In essence, the council gives its blessing “We will accept the American initiative at Washington's word of honor“, he stressed.
“The main thing is that this document does not become a cover for uncontrolled experiments by the United States and Israel in the occupied Palestinian territory and does not become a death sentence for the two-state solution“, Nebenzia said.
The US Permanent Mission to the UN reported earlier that the US draft resolution includes provisions supporting “international stabilization forces“ and providing “a stable, secure, peaceful and prosperous future for the Palestinians in Gaza without Hamas“. The US mission specified that it has been negotiating its document in the UN Security Council since early November.
