German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will hold talks today with US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, reports the “Bild“ newspaper, BTA reports.

According to information from the German tabloid, the three leaders will discuss the peace plan to end the war in Ukraine, which enjoys the support of Washington.

Earlier, Reuters, citing sources in the German government, reported that Merz intends to join a conversation with international leaders to discuss the US-Russian plan. To free up time for his participation, he has asked his chief of staff, Thorsten Frei, to represent him at another event.

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron are also expected to join the conversation, Reuters also reported.

Today marks the start of Merz's three-day visit to South Africa, with participation in the G20 summit in Johannesburg as the main highlight. The chancellor will then visit Angola, where a summit between the EU and the African Union is scheduled, DPA reported.

The agency notes that this is Merz's longest foreign trip since he took office earlier this year.
