Macron: Russians will attack again if Ukraine plan lacks deterrence elements. It must be coordinated with the EU

Leaders of the "Coalition of the Willing" countries to hold a video conference meeting on Tuesday. The North-Baltic Eight talks with Zelensky

French President Emmanuel Macron announced that the leaders of the "Coalition of the Willing" countries will hold a video conference meeting on Tuesday to discuss the American plan to end the conflict in Ukraine, Agence France-Presse reported.

“We will hold a meeting on Tuesday afternoon to coordinate our actions on this issue and to review the progress made during the talks in Geneva over the next few days“, Macron told the media last night on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in Johannesburg, South Africa.

If the peace plan for Ukraine does not contain elements of deterrence, the Russians will break their promise and attack again, the French president added.

National security advisers from France, Britain and Germany are expected to meet in Geneva today with representatives of the EU, the US and Ukraine to discuss a peace plan proposed by US President Donald Trump.

Many points of US President Donald Trump's controversial peace plan for Ukraine cannot be implemented without the approval of the country's European allies, French President Emmanuel Macron said on the sidelines of the G20 summit in South Africa, DPA reported.

Proposals such as the use of frozen Russian assets to help Kiev and Ukraine's accession to the European Union can only be determined by the EU, Macron added.

“The frozen assets are held by the Europeans. Ukraine's European integration is in the hands of the Europeans. What NATO does is in the hands of NATO member states,“ the French head of state said, adding that the US peace plan contains a number of aspects that require broader agreement.

According to Macron, Kiev's European allies want peace, but one that takes into account the security interests of Ukraine and other countries in Europe.

According to the proposed American plan for Ukraine, the territory in the eastern part of Donbas, which is currently still under Ukrainian control, would be ceded to Russia, and the Ukrainian army would be significantly reduced - to 600,000 people. NATO should also announce that it will not expand further, thus ruling out any possible membership of Ukraine in the defense alliance.

Ukraine would receive security guarantees from Washington, which have not yet been specified, as well as the possibility of joining the EU.

For its part, Russia would have to make relatively small concessions, including giving up its state assets that are frozen in the EU and which will be used to rebuild Ukraine.

President Trump said on Saturday that his current peace proposal for Ukraine was not final.

National security advisers from France, Britain and Germany are expected to meet in Geneva today with representatives of the EU, the United States and Ukraine to discuss the proposed peace plan.

The leaders of the Nordic-Baltic Eight (NB8) countries spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday, Reuters reported.

The Nordic-Baltic Eight is a regional cooperation format that includes Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden.

After the talks, the eight countries issued a joint statement. It said that “Russia has not yet committed to a ceasefire or any steps leading to peace“.
