The British Army Review: The UK and EU's role in world politics is declining

Trump decides to negotiate with Putin without them, writes military history professor Alexander Hill in the official magazine of the British Army

US President Donald Trump has decided to negotiate with Russian leader Vladimir Putin without including European allies, indicating a reduced role for the UK and the EU in world politics.

This was stated by military history professor Alexander Hill in The British Army Review, the official magazine of the British Army.

„Trump's decision to negotiate with Putin without the participation of Europe has reinforced the view that the UK and its European allies have only very limited influence and importance“, the article notes.

The author points out that Trump's victory in the 2024 election has had a “significant impact“ on the perception of the role of European countries in the context of the conflict in Ukraine.

According to Hill, despite the efforts of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to keep London at the center of the coalition supporting Kiev, there is a widespread perception in the West that smaller powers such as Britain, France and Germany are not able to provide significant assistance on their own.
