Environmental activists who blocked Hamburg airport were sentenced to pay compensation of over 400,000 euros

A German court ruled that 10 environmental activists from the organization "Last Generation" will have to pay compensation of over 400,000 euros for damage caused by an action in which they blocked Hamburg airport, "Deutschland Rundfunk" radio reported, quoted by BTA.

In addition, they will have to bear the costs of the case, which amount to nearly 700,000 euros. The amount that the activists were ordered to pay covers compensation for passengers, lost profits for airlines, etc.

On July 13, 2023, environmental activists managed to jump over a fence at Hamburg Airport and four of them got stuck on one of the runways. According to reports in some media, 57 flights were canceled because of their actions. Four women and six men aged between 19 and 63 participated in the action.

The case was filed by the airline "Eurowings" on behalf of the "Lufthansa Group". The decision of the Hamburg District Court is not final and can be appealed.
