The so-called “Trump's peace plan“, which shook Ukraine and Europe, is a mirage. Even the Kremlin didn't know about it.
This was stated to OBOZ.ua by Ukrainian publicist and analyst Vitaly Portnikov, according to whom this is a mistake, not a pre-planned strategy.
In recent days, Western media have spread information that Donald Trump has a 28-point peace plan for Ukraine, a draft of which was made public. According to analysts, the plan was written by Russians, not Americans, and some of the points force Ukraine to give up its lands, reduce its army, and forget about NATO.
Vitaly Portnikov said that there is actually nothing to analyze because “there is no plan at all“. He followed the chronology of events and argued why, in his opinion, this is a huge chaotic situation.
First, Trump talked with Putin in Alaska, but the meeting ended without a breakthrough. Then he began to plan a new meeting for Budapest, but Marco Rubio told him (after talking with Sergey Lavrov) that the Russians would not make any compromises. Trump then decided that there was no point in flying to Hungary, and ordered the imposition of sanctions against “Rosneft“ and “Lukoil“, hoping in this way to make Moscow stop the war.
Then Putin sent Kirill Dmitriev (a businessman close to the Kremlin) to Washington with the task of resolving the issue, if not by canceling, then at least by suspending these sanctions. Dmitriev met practically no one in Washington, except for the special representative of the US President, Steve Witkoff, who spent several hours with him. During this time, Dmitriev provided him with a draft of the so-called plan, which was not agreed upon by anyone - neither in the Russian presidential administration, nor in the Russian Foreign Ministry.
He was not working on a peace plan, but on suspending sanctions. Putin gave him carte blanche to talk to the Americans about it. Therefore, the Russians absolutely did not lie, neither Zakharova nor Peskov, when they said that they were not familiar with any peace plan. In the end, Dmitriev was simply bluffing.
However, here we come to the unprofessionalism of the Americans. Not very familiar with the details, Trump decides that now all that remains is to put pressure on the Ukrainians to agree to this proposal.
The Americans have to somehow get out of this situation with their heads held high, because they can't say "sorry, Witkoff is an idiot, Rubio doesn't know anything, and Trump didn't read the document". This is a big mess.
Putin himself didn't know about this "draft" either. He has no intention of stopping the fire in Ukraine, on the contrary. And Trump is surrounded by amateurs.
What awaits us now is the end of this story. And the beginning of a new one. Trump doesn't like to read (documents), he's a listener. And now the Europeans will start calling him. In a few days, this story will simply fall apart.
