Opposition leader arrested for trying to set fire to courtroom

Law enforcement officers detained opposition leader Aleko Elisashvili in Tbilisi, who tried to set fire to the city court office. This was stated in a statement by the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs.

„One of the leaders of the „Strong Georgia - Lelo“ coalition, Aleko Elisashvili, was detained after an attempt to set fire to the office of the Tbilisi City Court at dawn today“, the statement said.“

The investigation established that on Saturday morning Elisashvili, covering his face with a mask, broke the glass of the outer part of the courthouse with a hammer, entered and poured gasoline around the perimeter. He also doused equipment and documents in the office with gasoline and tried to start a fire. The perpetrator was stopped by court security officers, whom he resisted with weapons and was injured. Despite his resistance, the guards detained Elisashvili.

One of the injured was taken to hospital. Elisashvili himself was also injured. The police have seized the murder weapon. A criminal case has been opened.
