Significant damage in Greece from torrential rains

Over 5 millimeters of rain in Faliro, Alimos and Kifissia

Torrential rains, hail and thunderstorms caused by storm "Adele" covered Athens and several other regions in Greece last night and in the early hours of today, reports the electronic edition of the "Kathimerini" newspaper, quoted by BTA.

The National Observatory reported 52 millimeters of rain in Faliro and 50 millimeters in Alimos and Kifissia by 9 a.m.

Shortly before midnight yesterday, the central region of Attica was hit by a strong storm, accompanied by strong winds and hail in some areas. According to the fire service, the operations center received about 30 calls during this period due to fallen trees, mainly in the northern suburbs such as Kifissia, Lykovrisi and Metamorfosi, ANA-MPA notes.

In addition, according to the fire service, from the early hours of yesterday until today, the operations center received a total of 127 calls in Attica - 27 for pumping water and 49 for tree removal.

Hail hit the island of Lesbos yesterday afternoon, causing sewer blockages and flooding streets and shops in Mytilene. Civil protection officials urged residents to avoid travel. In Messolonghi, four soldiers were hospitalized after being struck by lightning, with three later discharged and one transferred to Patras for examination.

Eleven municipalities closed schools after landslides, fallen trees and power outages were reported in Epirus, Corfu and Finikounda.

The storm also caused flooding on the island of Thassos, according to footage released by Greek media showing flooded streets.

For today, the Greek National Meteorological Service is forecasting heavy rains and thunderstorms for the islands in the eastern Aegean Sea in the first half of the day and the Dodecanese - until late afternoon.
