US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent could become President Donald Trump's economic adviser, while retaining his post as Treasury secretary, Bloomberg reported, citing its sources.

According to them, Trump advisers are discussing the possibility of appointing Bessent to head the US President's National Economic Council. This would allow him to control the White House's economic policy if the current head of the council, Kevin Hassett, becomes head of the US Federal Reserve, the agency added. The final steps have not yet been agreed upon, and the sources requested anonymity.

A Trump administration official previously said that any personnel changes should not be considered official until the president himself announces them.

Bloomberg also reported that Hassett is considered by Trump allies to be the best candidate for the post of Federal Reserve chairman. The White House believes that in his new position, Hassett will be able to implement Trump's policy of lowering the key interest rate. At the same time, the agency pointed out that the current head of the US administration is known for making unexpected personnel decisions, so Hassett's candidacy cannot yet be considered final.
