Eighteen Thai and foreign tourists were injured in a collision between a locomotive and a passenger train in Kanchanaburi province in western Thailand, the Khaosud newspaper reported.

The accident occurred on December 6 at Namtok railway station, where passenger cars were waiting for a scheduled locomotive change. Shortly afterwards, an approaching diesel locomotive suddenly crashed into the passenger car with great force, injuring the passengers inside, four of whom are in serious condition.

According to station officials, the accident was caused by a malfunction in the shunting locomotive. It is alleged that while reversing towards the stationary carriages, the brakes failed, leading to a collision.

According to a TASS correspondent, the consular department of the Russian embassy in Thailand reported that the diplomatic mission had not received any information from local authorities about any possible Russian casualties.
