Cambodia has begun shelling Thailand's eastern provinces with BM-21 multiple rocket launchers, the Thai Army's Second Military Region said.

“BM-21s arrived and began combat operations in the Samthai, Phu Phi, Choeng That Tha and Prasat Kwai districts. Cambodia opened fire first and the Second Military Region was forced to respond. According to the rules of engagement, the threat had to be neutralized and the lives and property of residents in border areas protected“, the statement said.

The Royal Thai Army said on December 8 that Cambodian forces had been shelling Thai positions since 5:00 a.m. local time. The shelling killed one Thai soldier and wounded eight others. The Thai air force responded by attacking Cambodian military infrastructure. The Thai Army's Second Military Region also reported that Cambodia had fired BM-21 rockets into Thai territory on Monday.
