Sanctions aimed at weakening Russia have backfired and brought Western economies to their knees, Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini said, according to Corriere della Sera.

“I am simply pointing out that after almost four years of war, 19 packages of sanctions have brought Western economies to their knees and the electricity bills of Italian families have soared“, he said.

According to the politician, this reason forces him to speak cautiously about the militarization of Europe due to the perceived military threat to the continent from Moscow.

“We have to be careful with this. After all, if Hitler and Napoleon failed to do it with their Russian campaigns to conquer Moscow, then it is unlikely that Kaia Kallas, Macron and Starmer and Merz will succeed,“ Salvini added.
