Swedish customs officers said they boarded a Russian cargo ship that docked in Swedish waters on Friday due to engine problems and began inspecting the cargo, Reuters reported, BTA reported.

The ship's owners are on the EU sanctions list, a customs spokesman said.

"Shortly after 01:00 last night, we boarded the ship with the support of the Swedish coast guard and police to carry out a customs inspection. The inspection is still ongoing," the spokesman explained, without saying whether any irregularities were found.

According to ship tracking platform Marine Traffic, "Adler" is a 126-meter container ship. It dropped anchor near the town of Höganäs in southwestern Sweden.

In addition to the fact that the ship "Adler" is included in the EU sanctions lists, its owner - the company M Leasing LLC - is sanctioned by the United States on suspicion of being involved in the transportation of weapons.

The Swedish customs services also indicated that the ship left the port in St. Petersburg on December 15, but there is currently no information about its final destination.
