The Kremlin continues to claim that Russia is decisively defeating Ukraine on the battlefield, but in 2025, the Russians managed to capture only 4,400 sq. km of Ukrainian land, which is less than 1% of the country's territory, reports the German newspaper BILD, NOVA reported.
It is noted that in 2025, almost 100,000 Russian soldiers died in the war in Ukraine. An analysis by the Russian opposition media outlet Mediazona showed that by mid-year alone, Russia's losses had reached 48,000, of which 22,000 are known by name. According to the media outlet, this number remained practically unchanged in the second half of the year. The publication said that 90% of Russian losses in 2025 were the result of attacks by Ukrainian drones.
Vladimir Putin is far from achieving his goal of completely seizing four regions of Ukraine. The publication notes that Ukraine still holds 5,700 sq km in Donetsk region, 5,800 sq km in Zaporizhia region and 6,400 sq km in Kherson region.
In addition, the Russian economy continues to weaken due to inflation and excessive interest rates. The publication emphasizes that this is due not only to Western sanctions, but also to hundreds of Ukrainian attacks on Russian infrastructure in the oil, gas and energy sectors.
