France wants NATO exercises in Greenland and is ready to assist, Reuters reported, citing a statement from the office of French President Emmanuel Macron, BTA reported.
The Elysee Palace announced this at a time when US President Donald Trump is expected to arrive in Davos for the World Economic Forum. He is expected to use the forum to step up pressure to acquire Greenland despite European protests - the most serious confrontation in transatlantic relations in decades.
Europe will not yield to pressure or intimidation, Macron said in a speech in Davos, sharply criticizing Trump's threat to impose high tariffs if Europe "does not allow him to take Greenland".
NATO leaders have warned that Trump's strategy for Greenland could cause turmoil in the alliance. Trump linked Greenland to his anger at not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.
