Putin: Denmark has always treated Greenland as a colony - quite strictly, if not cruelly

But hardly anyone is interested in this now, and the situation does not concern Russia at all, the president said

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the situation around Greenland does not concern his country, TASS reported, quoted by BTA.

"What is happening with Greenland does not concern us at all", Putin said during an operational meeting with the permanent members of the Russian Security Council. According to the Russian president, the US and Denmark will find a common solution. "I think they will understand each other", he pointed out.

"By the way, Denmark has always treated Greenland as a colony, quite strictly, if not cruelly. But this is a completely different issue, hardly anyone is interested in this now," Putin noted.

According to him, the US "can afford" to "buy" Greenland if it was sold at prices comparable to those at which Russia sold Alaska to the Americans in the 19th century. The Russian president said that, according to his calculations, the amount for the purchase of Greenland could amount to between 200 million and 1 billion dollars.

"The area of Greenland is slightly larger (than the area of Alaska), in my opinion it is equal to 2.166 million square kilometers... That is, the difference is approximately 450-449 thousand square kilometers. Well, if we compare this with the cost of the acquisition of Alaska by the United States, then the price for Greenland would be somewhere around 200-250 million dollars," the Russian leader said. "If we take into account the gold prices of that time, this number would be higher, probably about a billion. But I think the US will be able to afford this amount," the head of state added.

Putin also commented on the peace process in the Gaza Strip. "The most important thing is that the entire process has a positive impact on the long-term settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict based on relevant UN resolutions. It is necessary to take into account the irrevocable needs and desires of the Palestinians," the president emphasized.
